Commissioned by TM CIT Blaton - Artes Roegiers, Safe continues to build in Mechelen. For years, we have been involved in the realisation of the concrete work of the railway bypass and car park around the central station. Now it is the turn of the station itself. Mechelen station dates from 1958 and no longer meets today's standards. Time for a serious overhaul.
Over an eight-year period, 10 railway sidings and the various floor slabs for, among other things, a bicycle shed for 5,000 bicycles and the underground bus lane will be realised in five successive phases. The track boxes - which consist of a lower slab, rail beams and indirectly a platform slab - each have a length of about 100 metres.
Safety and minimum disruption to travellers are obviously paramount. Thus, there are several pedestrian bridges around which we have to build our support structures. The PVRs we build into our structure allow concrete to be poured at height, while maintaining safe passage underneath. After all, the station will continue to operate as normal during the renovation work.
Our engineers are put to the test with outrigger loads of up to 100 kN. In addition, overhangs are realised with steel profiles which are placed on our support structure to accommodate concrete piles for the steel roof structure of the new station.
We have currently completed phase 1 and phases 2 to 5 are scheduled for the coming years. Safe will be active here in Mechelen until around 2028.
